Target Group
The course will provide training in Education management for the following categories of professional staff.
- Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLEAS)
- Sri Lanka Principal’s Service (SLPS)
- Sri Lanka Teacher Educator’s Service (SLTES)
- Performing the role of a principal in any school
Objectives
The objective of the DSM course is to provide the educational with management skills, analytical skills and soft skills for managing the schools.
The qualification holder should be able to achieve the below mentioned aims of the DSM course.
- To face current challenges effectively
- To support for the development of educational managerial competencies needed to develop quality school leadership with in the school system.
- To give knowledge skills and understanding about the managerial functions that should be performed.
- To guide for the way of working as a creative school manager in solving problems by identifying the problems existed at schools using the available resources.
- To keep internal and external relationships for the development of school functions effectively.
- To give knowledge for performing administrative functions in related to administrative role.
Eligibility
- The National Diploma in teaching or the Trained Teachers’ certificate and
- A minimum of four year teaching experience on which one year is in a post involving supervisory or administrative duties.
- The course will be advertised in the press
- The applicants have to sit for a paper on Education Management.
- According to the scores decided by the authority applicants should have to face an interview.
- Selected applicants also have to be recommended by the heads of their institutes.
Programme Structure
This course is designed to enhance specialized knowledge and skills in managing schools. The duration of the course is of 12 month period which includes 48 days -2 day contact sessions to be held twice a month on weekends. The course content has been reduced to 10 paramount areas so that the areas can be provided very practical aspects to increase the managerial competencies of participants. Previously 2 days had been allocated for one theme, yet presently 4 days have been allocated for one theme expecting to get a higher competency from each content area.
The teaching methodologies are accomplished by a set of activities based on learning together with face - to face contact sessions comprising the main mode of teaching. This includes andragogy approaches - expository, individualized learning and discovery methods, adopted as and when required.
Awarding Criteria
Distinction Pass
- GPA >= 3.70 AND GPV = 4.00 for SM0130, SM0140, SM0210, SM0220 and SM0230 AND GPV >= 3.70 for remaining courses
- A Distinction pass will not be awarded to candidates who missed the first sitting or referred and repeat the examinations. However special medical conditions will be considered to re-sitting candidates by the Examinations Committee of NIE on appeal
Merit Pass
- GPA >= 3.30 AND GPV >= 3.30 for all courses
- A Merit pass will not be awarded to candidates who missed the first sitting or referred and repeat the examinations. However special medical conditions will be considered to re-sitting candidates by the Examinations Committee of NIE on appeal
Ordinary Pass
- GPA >= 2.00 AND GPV >= 2.00 for all courses
Referred
- A Candidate who obtain a GPV < 2.00 for any courses will be considered as referred in particular course irrespective of GPA
- A Candidate who is referred in the programme has to repeat the examination for only the referred course in order to pass the programme

Course duration is 12 months and maximum of 60 months.

Application Fee: Rupees 1,500.00
Entrance Exam/Test Fee: Rupees 0.00
Registration Fee: Rupees 1,000.00
Programme Fee: Rupees 50,000.00 in 2 Instalment(s).
Examination Fees: In addition candidates have to pay examination fees when appling examinations.
