Target Group

This programme to cater to the professional development needs of the graduate teachers in the system.

Objectives

On completion, a Student Teacher will be able to,

  1. describe the appropriate "Standards for Teaching" as a profession.
  2. compare the current debates, concepts and issues in education and their relationship to wider political, economic and social developments.
  3. analyze some research problems that underpin practice.
  4. list a process entailed in carrying out an action research.
  5. explain the relevant education strategies, policies and guidelines, and their implications for teachers in relation to improvement of learning.
  6. demonstrate that teaching and learning occur in complex and contextualized settings that impact on practice.
  7. demonstrate personal and professional development through analysis and reflection.
  8. analyze one's own practice in order to improve teaching practice
  9. report independently on a project or extended assignment involving analysis, and presentation of materials and issues.
  10. demonstrate the skills and attributes required to meet the standards for SLQF Level 10.

Eligibility

A student seeking admission to the programme of study leading to the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Education will be required to confirm the following;

  • obtained a Bachelor's Degree from a recognized University or secured any other equivalent qualification acceptable to the Academic Affairs Board and the Council of the National Institute of Education.
  • and
  • should be a Teacher (SLTS) of a Government or Semi Government school or a Principal (SLPS) of a Government or Semi Government school or Principal/ Pirivanacharya (of Pirivena) / Other recognized religious educational institutions or an In-service Advisor or a Teacher Educator (SLTES) or a SLEAS Officer or a full time member in the academic staff of the National Institute of Education or a recognized University.
  • and
  • has had a permanent and continuous service from the date of the first appointment.

Programme Structure

This is Level Eight, (SLQF) 44 credits programme offered on part time basis which will be conducted at selected regional centres of the NIE during weekends and school holidays.

Full time programme will be conducted at the NIE premises on demand.

The teaching methodologies accomplished by a set of activities based on learning, together with Face-to-face contact sessions comprise the main mode of teaching. The main mode includes both pedagogical and andragogical approaches and also adopts expository, individualized learning and discovery methods.

Course duration is 18 months and maximum of 60 months.

Application Fee: Rupees 200.00

Entrance Exam/Test Fee: Rupees 0.00

Registration Fee: Rupees 1,200.00

Programme Fee: Rupees 60,000.00 in 2 Instalment(s).

Examination Fees: In addition candidates have to pay examination fees when appling examinations.
