Target Group

The sports coaches attached to State schools of Sri Lanka by the MoE in 2019, will be the clientele of this programme.

Objectives

To produce a set of coaching professionals, who are capable in developing Knowledge and Skills related to Physical Education and Sports in school children.

A candidate who has successfully completed this programme will be able to

  • analyse the evolution of Physical Education and Sports.
  • apply the principles of sports psychology and sociology for coaching.
  • execute the scientific principles in sports activities.
  • apply correct techniques and skills during coaching.
  • minimize risk behaviours in sports that can affect quality of life.
  • organise physical education events effectively.
  • develop a healthy life for students in order to face challenges of the 21st century.
  • conduct an action research to develop professional skills.

Eligibility

The admission process will begin with an advertisement published by the NIE in the newspapers and the NIE web. Among the candidates responding to this advertisement those living in close proximity to the institutes selected for offering of the Programme, will be admitted to the Programme, preferably through a selection interview.

Programme Structure

The curriculum of the Programme will consist of two components - academic and practical - dealing with the content relevant to Physical Education and Sports. The academic component will consist largely of group work conducted both within and outside the classroom. The practical component will take place in the field with particular reference to play grounds and gymnasia.

Awarding Criteria

Distinction Pass

  • GPA >= 3.70 AND GPV >= 2.00 for all courses
  • A Distinction pass will not be awarded to candidates who missed the first sitting or referred and repeat the examinations. However special medical conditions will be considered to re-sitting candidates by the Examinations Committee of NIE on appeal

Merit Pass

  • GPA >= 3.30 AND GPV >= 2.00 for all courses
  • A Merit pass will not be awarded to candidates who missed the first sitting or referred and repeat the examinations. However special medical conditions will be considered to re-sitting candidates by the Examinations Committee of NIE on appeal

General Pass

  • GPA >= 2.00 AND GPV >= 2.00 for all courses

Referred

  • A Candidate who obtains a GPV < 2.00 for any course will be considered as referred in the programme
  • A Candidate who refers in the programme has to repeat the examination for only the referred course in order to pass the programme

Duration

Course duration is 24 months and maximum of 60 months.

Fees

Application Fee: Rupees 2,000.00

Entrance Exam/Test Fee: Rupees 0.00

Registration Fee: Rupees 1,000.00

Programme Fee: Rupees 90,000.00 in 4 Instalment(s).

Examination Fees: In addition candidates have to pay examination fees when appling examinations.
